Many scholars who develop digital humanities projects also create more traditional forms of scholarship (e.g. papers) based on their project. While some projects yield discoveries that are suitable for publication in a journal specific to your field, digital humanities journals provide a place to publish work that addresses broader issues such as methodology, technical approach, and/or project development and evaluation. The following list of digital humanities journals, while not comprehensive, covers many major publication venues.
Digital Humanities Quarterly
Open access, peer reviewed, online-only.
Digital Humanities Quarterly (DHQ) is published by the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO). DHQ publishes a range of content, including:
- scholarly articles
- editorials and provocative opinion pieces
- experiments in interactive media
- reviews of books, websites, new media art installations, digital humanities systems and tools
New issues of DHQ are generally released quarterly, but new material is published in a "preview" area as soon as it is available.
DSH
Peer reviewed, print & online.
Formerly known as LLC (Literary & Linguistic Computing), DSH is an international peer reviewed journal on digital scholarship in the humanities, published by Oxford Journals on behalf of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO). It publishes:
- results of research projects
- description and evaluation of techniques and methodologies
- reports on work in progress.
DSH is published quarterly. ADHO members who pay the full membership rate receive a paper copy.
Digital Studies / Le champ numérique
Open access, peer reviewed, online-only.
Digital Studies / Le champ numérique (DS/CN) is published by the Société canadienne des humanités numériques (CSDH/SCHN), a member organization of ADHO. It publishes:
- academic articles
- scholarly notes
- working papers
- field synopses
- book reviews
- literature and research reviews
- well-documented opinion pieces
DS/CN publishes articles as they are ready, with "volumes" corresponding to the calendar year.
Digital Literary studies
Peer-reviewed, open access, online-only.
Digital Literary Studies publishes scholarly articles on research concerned with computational approaches to literary analysis/criticism, or critical/literary approaches to electronic literature, digital media, and textual resources.
In addition to longer, more traditionally-formed articles, this journal publishes positional papers and articles with a shorter experimental focus, as well as reviews of books and electronic literature. Contributors may also submit curated electronic texts for peer-review, as well as thoroughly-documented hermeneutical methods and tools. Any digital project with a literary focus, whether that be a digital edition, tool, or otherwise, may be considered for peer-review.
CA: Journal of Cultural Analytics

Cultural Analytics is a new journal dedicated to the computational study of culture. Its aim is to promote high quality scholarship that intervenes in contemporary debates about the study of culture using computational and quantitative methods. They are looking for articles that combine theoretical sophistication, computational expertise, and grounding in a particular field towards the crafting of novel, thought-provoking arguments. In combining the very best of the humanities and the social and computational sciences, Cultural Analytics aims to challenge disciplinary boundaries and serve as the foundational publishing venue of a major new intellectual movement.
Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy
Partly peer-reviewed, open access, online-only.
The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy publishes scholarship concerning critical and creative uses of digital technology in teaching, learning, and research. The content in each issue is peer-reviewed, but content in the Tool Tips, Teaching Fails, Assignments, Opinions, and Book Reviews sections is "peer reviewed" via comments on the piece after publication. Issues appear twice a year; other types of content appear throughout the year.
Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative
Peer reviewed, online-only.
The Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative primarily publishes papers from the annual TEI Conference and Members’ Meeting but sometimes has special issues based around topics or themes, with an open call for papers. The Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative is published at least once a year.
DHCommons
Open access, peer reviewed, online-only.
The DHCommons journal is a new publication from centerNet, an international organization of digital humanities centers, and an ADHO member organization. DHCommons provides peer review for mid-stage projects (i.e. those projects where considerable progress has been made, but work is still ongoing), with the goal of providing recognition for digital humanities projects in a form more familiar to promotion and tenure committees. Contributors submit a "project statement" (similar to an artist’s statement) describing the project and the interventions they have made. Project statements, as well as the projects themselves, are then peer reviewed, and reviews are published along with the project statement. Because DHCommons is a new journal, the publication schedule has not yet been determined.
Kairos
Open access, refereed, online-only.
Kairos is a journal of rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy. It publishes scholarship on topics related to technology in English Studies fields (e.g., rhetoric, composition, technical and professional communication, education, creative writing, language and literature). Submissions must make their argument through "rhetorical and innovative uses of new media". Kairos is published twice a year, with an additional special issue in May.
Journal of Digital Humanities
Open access, peer reviewed, online-only.
The Journal of Digital Humanities (JDH) draws its content from the "Editors’ Choice" pieces selected for the Digital Humanities Now aggregator of scholarship (including open access articles, blog posts, and other forms of online scholarship). There is no way to submit work directly to JDH, but you can add your blog to the "Compendium" of sites that the Digital Humanities Now editors scan for content to feature.
Journal of Digital and Media Literacy
Open access, peer reviewed, online-only.
The Journal of Digital and Media Literacy publishes reasearch articles along with hybrid, mixed-media, digital projects, with the goal of examining the ways people use technology to create, sustain, and impact communities on local, national and global levels. The journal publishes:
- Research articles (4000-5000 words)

- Digital tool reviews (1000-1500 words)
- Book reviews (1000-1500 words)
- Voices from the field (1500-3000 words)
