The GIS & Map Librarian, based out of the Earth Sciences & Map Library, curates a variety of geospatial data and offers reference services to students, faculty and staff.

Reference Services

The GIS & Map Librarian offers services by appointment, including:

  • discussing prospective geospatial research projects
  • determining what tools are appropriate to your research
  • locating data sets
  • troubleshooting desktop GIS software, such as ArcGIS and its open-source equivalent, QGIS

Resources

The Earth Sciences & Map Library homepage highlights a variety of databases and tools available to UC Berkeley affiliates. Examples of these resources include climate data collections, historical topographical map collections, digitized Sanborn fire insurance maps, and tools for demographic mapping.

The GIS & Map Librarian also curates GeoData@UCBerkeley, which draws from a consortial repository of geospatial data. Panning and zooming on a map interface, users can filter data sets by geographic areas of interest (i.e. California, Contra Costa County) and download them for use with desktop GIS software.
