Digital Humanities at Berkeley invites current UC Berkeley faculty, students, and academic staff to take advantage of our offerings for full tuition or discounted tuition in June 2018. The application deadline is midnight on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017. We particularly encourage applications from departments in the Division of Arts & Humanities.

DH at Berkeley has been well-represented at DHSI 2016. Our own Quinn Dombrowski led a well-attended Drupal course while Executive Director Claudia Von Vacano offered a well-received presentation on data science and the humanities at Berkeley.

To support humanities researchers who wish to take advantage of the cloud computing resources provided by the Berkeley Research Computing (BRC) program, two members of the Berkeley digital humanities community will be attending a summer workshop at the University of Victoria.

DH Fellow Eduardo Escobar, a PhD candidate in Near Eastern Studies, has turned to network analysis to study semantic and social networks in the history of science. In network analysis, a graph’s nodes (e.g. people, places, words) and their connecting edges (kinship, trade routes, synonyms) are visualized, with the goal of providing scholars with new insights.

Stephanie Moore has joined the Digital Humanities at Berkeley staff as a consultant. Stephanie is a seventh-year Ph.D. student in the English department writing her dissertation on allegory and mnemotechnics in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. She will primarily be consulting with the numerous Drupal-based digital humanities projects on campus, as well as running Drupal workshops and supporting the Drupal Developers' Circle working group.

Yairamaren Román Maldonado, a graduate student in Spanish & Portuguese with a designated emphasis in New Media, attended the Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria for the second year in a row, after taking “Electronic Literature in the Digital Humanities: Research and Practice” in 2014. This year, she attended two classes, “Digital Humanities with a Global Outlook” and “Advanced Criticism and Authoring of Electronic Literature”.

This summer, Alex Saum-Pascual, DH Fellow and Assistant Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, is working on bringing the electronic literature community to campus.

The Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria constitutes the largest annual gathering of North American digital humanists. 21 members of the UC Berkeley community, including students, faculty, and staff, will be attending DHSI this year. They come from departments around campus, such as New Media, History, Spanish & Portuguese, Research IT, and the Library. The digital humanities offer an exciting opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary methods and apply digital tools to humanistic research. However, developing these skills while balancing coursework, research, and instruction during the academic year can be a challenge.

Since its beginnings in 2001, the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) at the University of Victoria has grown to become a leading institute for training in the digital humanities (DH). This year, more than 600 participants flocked to Victoria, BC for an intensive week of DH workshops and extracurricular activities.
