The application deadline for the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) program have been extended to Friday, September 11th. The URAP program helps match UC Berkeley faculty, visiting lecturers, visiting scholars, and staff curators with undergraduate research assistants. In exchange for academic credit, apprentices can work with  URAP to develop and hone their skills with digital tools, databases, and archives.

On August 24th, the Visual Resources Center (VRC) hosted a workshop and several presentations on photogrammetric and 3D modeling tools and techniques. DH Fellow Lisa Trever, Assistant Professor in History of Art, presented her ongoing work on excavated murals at Pañamarca, Peru. This summer, she was joined by DH Interns Isabella Warren, a M.Arch student at the College of Environmental Design and Ashley Jerbic, a senior undergraduate in History of Art and Art Practice.

Digital Humanities at Berkeley hosted its inaugural Summer Institute (DHBSI) from August 17th - 21st. Instructors came from a variety of campus partner organizations, such as the D-Lab, the Library, and Research IT. The Summer Institute’s sixty students comprised undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff from departments and units such as Linguistics, Education, Art History, Music, Geography, History, the Library, and the Center for New Music & Audio Technologies.

Projects do not require extensive knowledge of the subject matter, and students at all academic levels are encouraged to apply.

This summer, Kyle Booten, Ph.D. candidate in Education with a designated emphasis in New Media, explored the fundamentals of Python programming through digital poetry with his undergraduate students. Meeting for six short weeks at the Berkeley Center for New Media, “Poetry and Technology: A Digital Verse Lab” students worked together in groups to produce works of digital poetry.

Marti Hearst, Professor of Information and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, recently presented a keynote titled, “Can Natural Language Processing Become Natural Language Coaching?” at the annual meeting of the Association of Computational Linguistics. Hosted in Beijing, this year’s conference attracted 950 attendees.
